Franklin Vets and Fonterra Launch Welfare Pilot Study
Franklin Vets as part of the XL Vets
has launched a national pilot project in conjunction with Fonterra to benchmark some key animal health markers on farms throughout the country, and Franklin Vets has eight farms enrolled in this project. The study involves regular monitoring of Herd Body Condition Score, antibiotic use, herd somatic cell counts, calf mortality, and lameness amongst others. These measures will be used to help determine what is good practice on our progressive farms for the future.
The end goal of this project, called Welfarm,
is to develop systems and measures that can be used as part of a dairy Welfare Quality Assurance program in the future. It is likely that such a program is going to be required by our overseas consumers in some shape in the near future. Our goal is to design something that achieves what the consumers of dairy products demand, but still adds value on farm, rather than have a program forced on us that has no benefit to the farm other than a box-ticking exercise.
We are looking for proactive farms to enrol for the coming season, so if you are interested in being a part of this initiative, talk to one of the Franklin Vets team for more information.
concept was founded in the UK in 2005. XLVets originated from a group of progressive farm animal veterinary practices, who worked hard to create a model where individual practices worked successfully in partnership. Following a period of rapid growth, XLVets in the UK is now recognised nationally as a 'quality mark' for veterinary care and is able to provide national consistency in veterinary services.
The strong links between New Zealand and the UK have led to the development of the XLVets group in NZ, set up with a similar goal of delivering a consistent and high quality national standard of veterinary service and advice. The linkages with the UK group, and developing European links, mean XLVets NZ member clinics have access to global ideas and resources, including people.
Franklin Vets is a founding member of the XL Vets New Zealand
; a group of eight progressive and innovative vet practices through the country, working together, sharing experience, knowledge and skills in order to define and deliver the highest standards of veterinary practice, animal health and productivity. For more information see www.xlvets.co.nz
