We provide immediate treatment and prognosis.

Franklin Vets can assess the severity of your horse's condition and discuss the treatment and prognosis.  We provide immediate treatment for mild to moderate cases.  If surgical intervention is necessary we provide immediate pain relief and arrange for prompt referral to an equine specialist.

Colic is abdominal pain usually associated with the gastrointestinal tract.

There are many different types of colic eg impacted or spasmodic and many different causes eg dietary or routine changes.

Regardless of these, the manifestation of pain usually consist of :

  • depression
  • sweating
  • rolling
  • kicking at the abdomen
  • decreased appetite
  • standing stretched out
  • restlessness
  • pawing
  • lying down
  • looking at the flanks
  • staggering

These signs may be mild, transient or severe depending on the cause.

If you suspect that your horse may have colic phone the vet immediately as this is an emergency and if let untreated your horse may die.
