Right Dog for the Job Project

Huntaway dog

Research Study Summary

Massey University is leading a genetic study of New Zealand’s working farm dogs to improve their health, welfare, and performance. Supported by MPI’s SFF Futures fund and partners like Focus Genetics, Pāmu, VetLife, and Ancestry, the project focuses on DNA-based breeding insights for Heading Dogs and Huntaways.

We’re looking for volunteers—both dogs and owners!

Dogs will be DNA sampled and assessed for physical traits, while owners will complete a survey on their dog’s health, behaviour, and working ability.

 What you’ll get:

  • A free genotype profile via Ancestry’s Know Your Pet DNA
  • Access to research findings and individualised reports
  • A chance to shape the future of NZ farm dogs.

Note - this is all free of charge to you.

 Risks & Ethics:

All procedures are approved by Massey’s Animal Ethics Committee. Sampling involves minimal discomfort and will be done by trained professionals.

 Your data:

Personal information is securely stored and kept confidential. Only aggregate results will be shared publicly.
