Preparing your cat for a vet visit

Date: 9 Jan 2026

Many cats find vet visits stressful. They dislike changes to their routine, being placed in a carrier, and leaving the safety of their home territory. New smells, unfamiliar animals, and travel can all add to their anxiety.

Studies show that over half of cats miss their yearly check‑ups, and many owners say they avoid visits because they expect the experience to be stressful for both themselves and their cat.

The good news is that there are simple steps you can take to make vet visits much easier.

Choose the Right Carrier

A carrier that opens from the top is ideal. It allows you to place your cat inside gently and lets our team examine them while they stay in the carrier, if that helps them feel safer.

Add a familiar blanket or favourite toy to bring the comfort of home with them.

Training your cat to see the carrier as a normal, safe space can also make a big difference.

Use Calming Pheromones

Products like Feliway and Calmex can help reduce stress naturally.

Pheromone sprays mimic the “happy messages” cats leave when they rub their face on objects.

Spray the carrier and bedding 10–15 minutes before your cat goes inside.

Reduce Movement During Travel

Let your cat settle in their carrier before you leave.

Secure the carrier in the car and place a towel over it to create a cosy, den‑like space.

Carry the cage steadily to avoid unnecessary movement.

At the Clinic

Cats feel safer when they can see their surroundings from above.

Our clinics provide cat towers and towels so you can place the carrier up high while you wait.

Stay Calm

Cats pick up on our emotions. Staying relaxed and speaking gently can help your cat feel more secure.

How We Can Help: The Chill Protocol

For cats who become very anxious or fearful, we may recommend a “Chill Protocol.”

This involves giving a prescribed medication before the visit to help your cat stay calm and reduce stress-related behaviours.

Research has shown that this approach can make examinations and procedures much easier and more comfortable for many cats. It can also be used alongside calming products like Feliway or Calmex.

In some cases, we may require the Chill Protocol for the safety and wellbeing of both your cat and our team. With the right preparation and support, vet visits can become much easier for both you and your feline friend—ensuring they never miss the care they need.
