Setting Up Reproductive Success Before Calving
Date: 1 Jun 2026
Pregnancy testing may already feel like a distant memory, but it’s worth reflecting: were you happy with the result? Do you want to maintain performance or lift it next season?
While mating still seems a long way off, the lead-up to calving is a critical window to influence next season’s reproductive success. The following articles provide details of important focus areas at this point of the season. Below are reminders of the key focus areas:
- Calving pattern, although difficult to change now, can be tightened on some farms by culling of very late-calving cows.
- Body condition score (BCS) at calving for mature cows should be at least 5.0, and for first and second-calvers, 5.5. Targeted supplement use for dry cows will help close existing gaps. Minimise post-calving BCS loss by using feed budgets and transition planning, supported by regular monitoring of production and wearable data, and visual assessment of cows and pasture.
- Herd health planning should focus on reducing the risk of calving difficulties, metabolic disease, mastitis, lameness, and BVD infection.
- Heat detection can begin with minimal effort. Wearable technology or early tail paint application can help track days to first heat and premating activity.
- While calf health won’t affect this season’s in-calf rate, it underpins future performance. Ensure calves receive sufficient high-quality colostrum, followed by appropriate nutrition and weaning based on growth targets.
- Similarly for heifers, ensure target weights are met for first mating with plans in place where required, and that mineral and other treatments are completed.
- For incoming heifers, consider strategies such as running a separate herd, once-a-day milking, or targeted drenching if they are below liveweight targets.
With good planning and monitoring now, you’ll be well placed to maximise reproductive performance next season. And remember, your veterinarian is there to help.
