The importance of puppy socialisation

Puppy Preschool

Whether it is aggression, chasing stock or destroying the house, behavioural issues in dogs still are one of the leading reasons for euthanasia.

To help understand why these problems may arise dogs have what is called a socialisation period. This period is generally between 2-16 weeks of age and is when they will learn the most about themselves, their environment, different situations and the people and things around them.

During this time, puppies are still undergoing their initial vaccination course, leaving them susceptible to infectious diseases, which can be life-threatening. It is important to find the right balance between raising a well-socialised dog whilst keeping them safe.

Puppy Preschool is an excellent way to socialise your puppy with other dogs, people and situations whilst keeping them safe. Our classes accept puppies between 7 and 12 weeks of age, when they are right in the peak of their socialisation period, providing the perfect opportunity to expose your puppy to as many different experiences as possible. During puppy classes, your puppy will learn how to safely interact with other dogs and people, learn basic behaviour training and commands, and you will be provided with a range of information to help you integrate your puppy into being a well-mannered member of the family.

Playing with other puppies and dogs at your pup's young age needs to be fully supervised. You can invite fully vaccinated dogs to your house, or visit other friends or family’s dogs as long as you know the property is safe from infectious diseases.

It is important that your puppy is introduced to many different places, sounds and experiences as possible. Things to consider are:

  • Vacuum cleaners
  • Washing machines/dryers
  • Telephones
  • Cars/trucks
  • Bikes/scooters/skateboards
  • Thunder/fireworks
  • Hairdryer/clippers
  • People in Hi-Vis vests/helmets
  • People with beards
  • People wearing sunglasses/face masks
  • People of different ages and ethnicities

Remember when introducing your puppy to these different experiences to support him if he is fearful with long calming strokes, a soothing gentle voice and a favourite toy or blanket. Show him you are not concerned because your puppy will pick up on your anxiousness.
